Celebrating 25: Navigating the Labyrinth of Achievement and Self-Discovery
Over the course of this year, I frequently found myself introspectively murmuring, “Approaching 25, and it appears that my accomplishments thus far are rather modest.”
Yup. I’m getting close to 25, and I can’t shake this feeling that I haven’t really accomplished much so far. I find myself grappling with a sense of existential contemplation, pondering the perceived absence of significant achievements or substantial progress in my life thus far.
As I stand on the precipice of a quarter-century existence, I still often find myself complaining about the difficulties life brings, especially as I navigate adulthood. The challenges have made me more aware, forcing me to think carefully about many aspects of my life. From managing finances to dealing with personal relationships and working towards meaningful goals, every detail seems to require thoughtful consideration. This process of reflection has become a regular part of my life, as I try to handle the various demands that come with growing up.
It’s really not a walk in the park. It truly is not.
There were times when I’d find myself ensconced in the throes of profound emotional turmoil, contemplating giving up on life. In this state of profound confusion, I found myself bereft of not only a compass to guide my way but also any discernible solutions to traverse the intricate labyrinth of challenges that bore down heavily upon my shoulders.
I turned to prayer, regularly voicing my frustrations to God with a persistent refrain: “Why put me in this situation?” It was a genuine, ongoing conversation reflecting my inner struggles, a heartfelt plea for understanding amidst circumstances that felt inexplicable. Yet, there was no response, no solution in sight. It wasn’t until a Sunday service session that God gently reminded me:
We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. — Romans 5:3–5 (NLT)
This verse is basically saying: when life throws problems at us, instead of getting all bummed out, we should look at it like a chance to toughen up. Dealing with issues helps us build up endurance, which is like our inner strength. So, facing problems isn’t all bad because it molds our character and makes us stronger, you know? It’s like going through this whole process gives us a solid hope that won’t end up letting us down. And it’s all because God’s got our back, filling our hearts with love through the Holy Spirit. We hold the belief that challenges serve a redeeming purpose, portraying them as essential elements in our journey toward spiritual growth and fostering unwavering hope.
Again. It’s really not like a walk in the park. It truly is not.
Putting faith in the idea that God supports us in every situation is not a simple belief; it involves a profound level of trust and conviction. This belief entails surrendering control to a higher power and finding solace in the understanding that, even in the face of uncertainty, there is a constant source of support.
Reflecting on my journey thus far, I recognize that God has been a constant presence through thick and thin. Maybe I ain’t clocking any flashy life milestones by regular standards, but the real wins? They’re all in the self-awareness and grown-up vibes I’ve picked up along the way. That’s gotta count as leveling up, right?
The unfolding of my 25th year remains shrouded in uncertainty. The contents of God’s plans for me remain a mystery, and I lack any foreknowledge of the vicissitudes that lie ahead. But one thing I’m dead sure about: God stands as my unwavering support through it all.
